5G network expansion at O2: These cities are now included

Step by step, O2 is putting more and more 5G antennas into operation. As of now there are almost 2,000 pieces in around 80 cities. We’ll show you where you can already use the new cellular standard in the O2 network and what you have to pay attention to in this context.

Telefónica Deutschland’s 5G network (O2) continues to grow.

The network expansion at Telefónica Deutschland is making good progress. After CEO Markus Haas announced that it wanted to eliminate all dead spots in Germany by 2024 in cooperation with Deutsche Telekom , Vodafone and the federal government , the company has now announced another milestone. Because not only the LTE expansion is progressing in the network of Telefónica Deutschland, the parent company of the core brand O2, but also the 5G expansion.

5G IN THE O2 NETWORK NOW IN 80 CITIES

As Telefónica Deutschland announced on Friday, 5G is now available to O2 customers at almost 2,000 antenna locations in around 80 cities. The 3.6 GHz frequency specially designed for 5G is used for this . However, it should be noted that in cities where the new cellular standard is already available for O2 customers, the new cellular network cannot be used nationwide. And in rural regions, 5G is still the absolute exception in the O2 network . You can use a network coverage map on the O2 homepage to check whether you can already use 5G at home or whether you currently have to be satisfied with LTE.

By the way, Telefónica has already installed 375 5G antennas in Berlin . This makes the capital the front runner in the O2 network in terms of 5G expansion in Germany. According to the company, there are already 175 3.6 GHz antennas installed by Telefónica in Munich, around 150 in Hamburg and more than 120 each in Cologne and Stuttgart. Nuremberg can look forward to 100 and Bonn to around 75 5G antennas.

For a few days now, 5G has also been available in the O2 network in Leipzig, Regensburg, Pforzheim, Freiburg im Breisgau, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Wörth am Rhein, among others. By the end of the year, the provider wants to provide around 30 percent of the German population with 5G. A nationwide supply in Germany is planned for 2025.
