After many announcements, ZDF finally took on the supposedly mammoth project, the novel was considered unfilmable for many years. In the meantime, the post-production of “Der Schwarm” has also been completed and ZDF is around 40 million euros lighter, as reported by the Stuttgarter Zeitung . Now the series officially starts.

In order to preserve the complexity of the book template and the meaning, both the author Frank Schätzing himself and the executive producer Frank Doelger (Game of Thrones) have updated the storylines. The series was shot exclusively in Europe, including at various locations in Italy and also in Brussels.

THAT’S WHAT FRANK SCHÄTZING’S SCIENCE FICTION WORK IS ABOUT

Aggressive whales in Canada. Wild screaming people. Chaos – and all around the globe. Based on Schätzing’s novel, everything revolves around the question: what happens when nature strikes back mercilessly? Humanity is confronted with a swarm intelligence that lives deep in the sea and is unknown.

Various scientists are looking for answers – for example the fearless marine biology student Charlie Wagner (Leonie Benesch) by documenting ocean current data on the Shetland Islands or Sigur Johanson (Alexander Karim), who discovers a dangerous ice worm. The scientists quickly realize that the mysterious events are all related.
