Strictly limited: BMW launches Mini Cabriolet in small series

Less than 1,000 units will be produced by a new electric car that will go on sale in spring 2023. We are talking about the Mini Cabriolet from the BMW Group, which has now made it from a concept car to a small series. But it won’t be cheap.

The Mini Cooper SE Cabrio comes on the market fully electric – but strictly limited.

The Mini becomes electric. Admittedly, this isn’t hot news. Because the small car from BMW has been available in the classic version as an emission-free car for three years. Nevertheless, there is exciting news just before the beginning of spring. Mini announces that it will also produce the Mini Cabriolet in a small series as an electric car.

MINI CABRIOLET ELECTRIC: THE OPEN-AIR ELECTRIC CAR

Equipped with sports seats including seat heating and a heated sports leather steering wheel, the Mini Cabriolet is 3.85 meters long and has a wheelbase of almost 2.50 meters – with a height of almost 1.43 meters. In addition, there will be plenty of leather and ambient lighting in the interior of the four-seat car. There are also elements set off in yellow; for example on the start-stop button.

The manufacturer specifies the output as 135 kW (184 hp); with a maximum torque of 270 Nm. According to the manufacturer, this allows stepless acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds using the front-wheel drive. The all-electric Mini Cabriolet not only shows all important information while driving on a screen behind the steering wheel, but also on a head-up display. All fresh-air fans are on the move on 17-inch wheels made of recycled aluminum.

The soft top can be opened and closed fully electrically at speeds of up to 30 km/h. Alternatively, it is also possible to use the roof in a sunroof function. The top speed is limited to 150 km/h. Mini states the combined power consumption at 17.6 to 15.4 kWh/100 km, the electric WLTP range at 203 to 232 kilometers.

The classic Mini Cooper SE Electric is on the road with the same values. One can therefore assume that the built-in battery will offer a fairly low capacity of just under 33 kWh (gross). That also explains the unfortunately quite manageable range. The Mini Cabrio is less suitable for long-distance journeys than for refreshing short trips in the region.

HOW MUCH DOES THE ELECTRIC MINI CONVERTIBLE (2023) COST?

The Mini Cooper SE Cabrio is available in Europe in a limited number of 999 vehicles. It should be possible to order from April in the colors black and white-silver with bronze-colored decorative elements. BMW has not yet commented on a price in an associated media release. According to media reports, it should be around 60,000 euros. That’s quite a lot for a small car, but it underlines the premium character that BMW wants to emphasize with the Mini Cabrio. The production takes place in the Netherlands.
