The Hollywood star had been quiet for a while, but now Will Smith is back. For the first time since the Oscar incident, where he slapped presenter Chris Rock, the actor is back with a new project. And that’s tough – and could nominate Smith for the popular film award despite the Oscar ban.
WILL SMITH IS BACK WITH THIS SERIES
Above all thematically, because his brand new film is about slavery in Louisiana in the 1863s – in the middle of the Civil War. Even more: The story shown there is based on true events and is accordingly depressing. The new film, starring Will Smith, is aptly titled Emancipation and has been in the pipeline for some time.
Specifically, Emancipation is based on a photograph of Whipped Peter, a slave whose photograph became famous. It was used at the time to promote the abolition of slavery in the United States . It shows his back scarred by lashes.
In the film, Peter (Will Smith) risks his life to escape slavery. One thing motivates him above all: the love for his family, to which he absolutely wants to return home. Unshakeable, he escapes his tormentors to achieve his goal. But the journey to his family is long and dangerous, and the slave hunters are always on his trail.

In addition to Will Smith as the main actor, Antoine Fuqua (“The Equalizer”) is responsible for producing and “Assissin’s Creed” author William N. Collage is responsible for the screenplay. The slavery drama had been in the planning for a long time exclusively for Apple’s streaming service Apple TV + and put more than 100 million US dollars on the table.
Now a trailer gives a first taste of “Emancipation” before the drama officially appears in December. The film launches exclusively on Apple TV + on December 9th, before that it will be shown in a few select cinemas from December 2nd – at least in the USA.
