Block Google Chrome easily with the iPhone: Here’s how

Google allows Chrome users extended protection when surfing with the alternative browser. With this you can protect incognito tabs from prying eyes. However, the feature must be activated explicitly.

Thanks to a new function that is currently still in the test phase, you can provide the Incognitotabs in Google Chrome for iPhone and iPad with enhanced protection . You can protect access to the tabs with Face ID or Touch ID. Only when the iOS device has recognized the correct face or correct finger can you see which incognito tabs are open.

As PhoneArena reports, the feature is currently still an experimental function. Therefore, you first have to activate the option in the Google Chrome settings via a small detour.

GOOGLE CHROME: ACTIVATE THE OPTION FOR PROTECTION

The activation of the protection for the Incognitotabs can be done in two steps. Here is the first step that unlocks the actual option in the Google Chrome settings. The current version of the browser is required. Google Chrome 91.0.4472.80 is used in our instructions.

In Google Chrome you open a tab with the address “chrome: // flags”
Use the search function above to search for “Device Authentication for Incognito”
Change this option from “Default” to “Enabled”.
Then you have to close Google Chrome using the iOS app switcher and reopen it. To do this, swipe up from the bottom edge, for example on an iPhone with Face ID, and stop in the middle of the screen. In the app switcher, put your finger on Google Chrome and swipe the app up to close the browser . Then you can open Chrome again as usual.

ACTIVATE PROTECTION FOR INCOGNITOTABS

After opening the browser, a new option for protecting the tabs can be found in the settings:

Tap on the three dots in the lower right corner and select Settings
Under the data protection option , you can now activate “Block incognito tabs when Chrome is closed”

If you now go to the incognito tabs in the tab overview, the content is no longer directly visible. Instead, you have to explicitly release them with Face ID or Touch ID.

So if you give the smartphone or tablet to another person for whatever reason, they will not have direct access to the protected tabs. The browser history and your own privacy are thus better protected from prying eyes. The feature is available in both Google Chrome for iPhone and iPad.
