More than 30 years after the accident, the Chernobyl reactor disaster is slowly making its way into popular culture . Now a video game is available that offers a new take on what happened. You can find out what it is and what is behind it here.
“Chernobylite” is the new, photo-realistic video game about the reactor disaster in Chernobyl, which occurred in 1986. Despite immensely realistic aspects such as the level design of the game, it is not a pure simulation of what is happening. We’ll tell you what it’s about instead here.
THE STORY OF CHERNOBYLITE
Chernobylite is a science fiction survival horror set 30 years after the terrible Chernobyl reactor disaster. The main character, Igor, in whose role you slip during the game, returns to Pripyat. As a former employee and ex-physicist of the nuclear power plant, you already have a past in the city. You return to the Zone to find your fiancée Tatiana, who disappeared 30 years ago.
The time is a little crazier in the zone than in the rest of the world. This can lead to incidents that even change the past. But that’s not the only problem that will stand in your way. You will also encounter military presence in the zone, as well as other, dark secrets.
Will you manage to unravel the zone’s secrets and solve the disappearance of your fiancée? It’s up to you to overcome your fear and get to the bottom of it. But be warned, your choices, no matter how insignificant, can have a big impact on the story. Sometimes you feel it right away, sometimes hours later.
GAMEPLAY
Chernobylite’s gameplay is open and the story is non-linear. You explore the story in your own way and are not constantly pushed in a predetermined, fixed direction by the game. This allows exciting discoveries and a gaming experience according to your ideas. It’s up to you to develop a strategy that will advance both your survival and your ultimate goal.
Another important element of the game is the companion system. Survival in the zone is almost impossible on your own, so it’s up to you to build your team. Provide your fellow campaigners with weapons, ammunition and medicine and they will protect and accompany you to your destination.
The game’s map is also based on a 3D scan of the actual, real environment around Chernobyl. This results in an extreme realism that has never been seen in other games of the kind. The game convinces with its attention to detail and the realistic representation, which lead to an unbelievable atmosphere. Never before has a restricted area been shown in a video game with so much detail and character.
