In the past year, Amazon, Netflix, DAZN and other streaming services have raised their prices, some significantly. But apparently not every price increase was right. This is how a streaming service should pay back overpaid fees.
A lot has become more expensive in the past year. Even the streaming service providers, which have been swimming on the wave of success for a long time, had to turn the price screw. Whether Amazon Prime Video , Netflix or DAZN : If you subscribe to a streaming service today, depending on the subscription model, you pay almost twice as much as a year ago. But a popular streaming service is now being targeted by consumer protection. The price increase was obviously not legal. And customers should get money back retrospectively.
ILLEGAL: STREAMING SERVICE DAZN SHOULD PAY BACK MONEY
In addition to Amazon and Netflix, Sky and DAZN also increased their prices – sometimes significantly . The sports streaming service DAZN, for example, doubled the cost of a monthly subscription. Instead of around 15 euros, subscribers suddenly had to pay just under 30 euros. The price for the annual subscription also increased significantly. Instead of the previous 150 euros, the streaming service now charges 275 euros. The outrage was great, but for DAZN it was clear: ” The price increase is justified. But the consumer center obviously sees it differently and now wants to bring all customers their money back.
“The Federation of German Consumer Organizations (vzbv) considers the underlying terms and conditions clause to be non-transparent and therefore the price increase for existing customers to be illegal,” says consumer protection. A class action lawsuit aims to recover the overpaid fees from the streaming service for affected customers. The consumer advice center is looking for DAZN customers who are affected by the price increase during an ongoing contract. Well-documented cases are needed for a model lawsuit. Anyone who wants to join the class action lawsuit against DAZN can do so on the consumer advice center’s website . If the price increase is unlawful, customers with an annual subscription will receive a refund of 125 euros.
STREAMING PROVIDERS ALWAYS IN FOCUS
It’s not the first time a streaming service has been sued. Disney + also became the focus of consumer protection last August . The provider reserves the right in its terms of use to increase its prices unilaterally and without any restrictions at the expense of the customer. The consumer advice center saw this as a clear violation of the legal regulations and warned the Walt Disney Company. The company did not issue a cease and desist letter. Therefore, the consumer advice center is now suing the Potsdam District Court.
