When there is construction work on the Deutsche Bahn rail network or another disruption slows down traffic, it can really get on the nerves of travelers. Be it a construction site, a switch fault, overhead line damage, a broken-down train or an emergency doctor on the track – there are many possibilities why the railway can no longer continue as planned. At this point we will inform you about current construction projects in the Deutsche Bahn network, which you should know, especially as a commuter.

MAJOR CONSTRUCTION SITES AT DEUTSCHE BAHN IN 2023

Deutsche Bahn will invest a lot of money in the coming years to keep its partially dilapidated route network in good shape. Between 2020 and 2030, a record sum of 86 billion euros will go into maintaining and modernizing the existing rail network; 62 billion euros come from the federal government, 24 billion euros from the railways themselves. Of course, much of this cannot happen without disruption to rail traffic. Wherever work is being done on open routes, trains have to slow down or take a detour. The result: delays and equally annoyed customers.

That’s why Deutsche Bahn has set itself the task of providing extensive information about upcoming major construction sites . Many construction projects are on Deutsche Bahn’s agenda for the coming months. We will show you the details here – including current disruptions. If you know other major construction sites yourself, don’t hesitate to give us a short tip .

If you are a commuter, you should therefore also be familiar with the Deutsche Bahn construction site app . It informs you daily about forthcoming construction work.

COMPENSATION FOR LONG DELAYS

Delays are generally unavoidable when construction takes place on the rails. However, you are still entitled to compensation if your train is too late. If you arrive at your destination station at least 60 minutes (1 hour) late, you will receive compensation amounting to 25 percent of the fare paid for the single journey. With at least 120 minutes (2 hours) you are even entitled to compensation of 50 percent of the fare paid for the single journey.

If you are traveling with a season ticket on long-distance transport, you will be reimbursed a flat rate of 5 euros (2nd class) or 7.50 euros (1st class) for delays of 60 minutes or more. With the BahnCard 100 you get a flat rate of 10 euros (2nd class) or 15 euros (1st class).

Important: In future there will no longer be any compensation if a train is canceled or severely delayed due to a storm. This goes back to a reform of passenger rights decided by the European Parliament. Rail companies in Europe no longer have to pay compensation if they are not responsible for the cause of the delay. According to the definition, this applies to extreme weather conditions, major natural disasters or major health crises such as pandemics. Strikes, on the other hand, are not included.
