DFB-Pokal on TV: So it goes on now

New rights allocation in the DFB-Pokal. From the 2022/2023 season, the DFB, as the organizer of the cup competition, in which amateurs compete with professionals, has re-tendered the TV rights. It is now clear who will show the games.

As before, Sky Deutschland remains the DFB’s most important partner in this competition. While the pay TV broadcaster has completely lost its rights to the Champions League and also had to give up on the Bundesliga , it will be the only broadcaster to show all DFB Cup matches live for the next four years.

The new contract includes the platform-neutral rights to the competition for the seasons 2022/23 up to and including 2025/26. Sky broadcasts all 63 games of the competition live per season, 48 of them exclusively on German television . In addition to the individual games, Sky will also show all parallel encounters in the Original Sky Conference. The semi-finals and the final should also be shown in UHD.

Sky customers can also be the first to see highlights of all games on demand. In addition to the live broadcast rights and the game summaries that can be seen after the games, Sky has also secured digital clip rights. You can use Sky for your own customers as well as freely receivable. They are apparently intended to be used primarily in social media. Sky will be able to provide its customers with in-match videos of goals and other highlights while the games are still ongoing. In addition, Sky customers will be able to view the summaries of all matches immediately after the end of the game on demand.

DFB CUP ON FREE TV

Another package of rights for game summaries went to Sport 1. The broadcaster will no longer be there live. From next year, Sport 1 will have the rights to TV exploitation of all 63 DFB Cup matches per season in game summaries of up to 6 minutes. However: these summaries may only be broadcast and made available for retrieval from 6 a.m. on the next day. The DAZN streaming service can offer these summaries a little faster: In the future, fans will be able to access the highlights of the cup games on the digital platform of the streaming service from midnight on the day of the match.

Much more interesting is the rights package that the sports rights agency SportA GmbH acquired for its shareholders ARD and ZDF. In addition to the live transmission of a total of fifteen live games per season, the agreement also includes extensive subsequent exploitation rights – both for traditional television and for all digital offers from ARD and ZDF. You will be able to watch a total of 15 games of the competition per year on free TV, financed by fees.

These rights are granted until the 2025/2026 season.
