AVM is known for producing good routers that are suitable for the mass market. The disadvantage: Most of the time, the WLAN devices are not exactly bargains. Now AVM is apparently working on a successor to the FritzBox 4040 – the entry-level WLAN router .
The model name of the new router will appear to be FritzBox 4060. This indicates a direct successor to the FritzBox 4040. This router is not only cheap, it has also been reduced by AVM to the core functions of a WLAN router. That means, in contrast to the flagships in the cable and VDSL area, the FritzBox 4040 does not have a modem on board. Telephoning is also not possible with the router.
The speculation goes back to a tweet referring to so-called in-house software that has emerged. This is obviously an internal software for a router, the model name of which does not yet exist – the FritzBox 4060.
According to Deskmodder, the firmware with the name FRITZ.Box_4060.07.26-89738-Inhaus.image should also indicate that the FritzBox supports WiFi 6 . This is the latest WLAN standard, which enables significantly faster data rates than before and can also serve more devices at the same time. Further speculations are in the direction of 2.5 gigabit WAN ports and DECT – but at least the latter is unlikely. It would contradict the concept of the 40xy range.
WHEN WILL THE FRITZBOX 4060 ARRIVE?
In any case, the rumors about the FritzBox 4060 – if they exist – are at a very early
stage. AVM would normally announce such a product at the IFA in September. However, this trade fair has been canceled due to the pandemic, so AVM has no time pressure here. It usually takes several months to a year before a new router is presented at a trade fair before it is on the shelves. It is therefore possible that a new router will only be available for purchase in the coming year.
When we asked AVM how a FritzBox 4060 was ordered, the Berlin manufacturer said, as is customary in such cases, that they currently have no announcements to make. But there was no denial either. Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether and when there will be a successor to the FritzBox 4040 and how much it will cost. The 4040 is usually available for less than 80 euros .
