Huawei Mate 40 Pro: this is the new flagship

Huawei has presented the Huawei Mate 40 Pro. The Chinese have improved the successor to the Mate 30 Pro in many points and are relying on the new Kirin 9000 processor. But the more decisive question is how the software will continue. Because Huawei has also stepped up here.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is a typical Mate smartphone : It is large, peppered with high-tech components and the Group’s technology carrier in the smartphone sector. All of this also radiates outward. The predecessor’s camera design has become even more confident. A dark ring adorns the back, in which the three cameras are embedded. With the right incidence of light, the rear shines in all colors and thus loses its matt finish every now and then. A successful look.

Fans of flat screens will not find the Huawei Mate 40 Pro much for them. Because the panel bends 88 degrees around the long edges in the frame. The Horizon display, as Huawei calls it, has a resolution of 2,772 x 1,344 pixels and a diagonal of 6.76 inches. This makes it 456 ppi. The refresh rate is 90 Hertz. Richard Yu, President of Huawei, justifies the waiver of a 120 Hertz display with the more economical consumption. “It would be”, said the Huawei boss, “but also not a problem to block 120 Hertz”. Huawei has provided an always-on display that is based on EOD (Eyes On Display). The phone knows when you are looking at it and then activates the “Always on Display”. If your eyes are not on it, it will turn itself off automatically.

Two small buttons peek out of the case to the right of the display. You are responsible for the volume. Isn’t that quite normal, do you think? Yes, but not since the Mate 30 Pro . Huawei omitted the buttons there and exchanged them for virtual counterparts. You can also use it on the Mate 40 Pro if you like.

KIRIN 9000 – HUAWEI MATE 40 PRO WITH 5G SOC

The new Kirin 9000 produced in the 5nm process by HiSilicon, Huawei’s processor division, can do 5G and that as a SoC. This makes the processor the first in the world to combine all of these characteristics in a system on a chip. Huawei divides it into a high-performance core, three medium cores and four basic cores. According to Huawei, the CPU should be 30 percent faster than the Kirin 990, and the GPU 50 percent faster.

The processor is accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. The latter can also be expanded using an NM card. According to Huawei, the 5G speed is also increasing and is twice as fast as the Mate 30 Pro.

The fastest phones in the world – These are the top 15
Fast is also the magic word when charging the battery. Arithmetically 65 watts are included with a cable and 50 watts without a cable. The battery is 4,400 mAh and can also transfer its energy to other devices via wireless charging. For example, headphones can be charged via the back of the smartphone.

THE CAMERA OF THE HUAWEI MATE 40 PRO

Huawei is again placing great emphasis on its “Ultra Vision Cine Camera”. Behind the word monster is a triple camera with an Ultra Vision Wide Angle from the P40 Pro , a periscope module with 5x optical zoom, also known from the P40 Pro , and a cine camera, which records videos and ultra wide angle in 2: 3 format Photos created. However, it is specially optimized for videos. Huawei calls the video production “XD Fusion HDR”, but this accesses all camera modules. For videos there is also digital video stabilization with Steady-Shot and focus tracking of people with Tracking Shot. It works between 2 and 7 meters away and automatically focuses on a person, no matter where they are moving.

The cameras at a glance:

Front camera: 13 MP selfie camera (f / 2.4) + 3D depth sensor
Main camera: 50 MP Ultra Vision camera (wide angle, f / 1.9)
20 MP ultra wide angle camera (f / 1.8)
12 MP telephoto camera (5 x optical zoom, f / 3.4, OIS)

There is a 3D depth sensor on the front, but it is integrated into the selfie camera with gesture control. It is flanked by an ultra-wide-angle camera. The software automatically sets to normal selfies when the Mate 40 Pro is held upright. Transverse is switched to ultra-wide angle. But you can also freely determine which focal length should be used.

SOFTWARE – NO GOOGLE SERVICES, BUT NEW FEATURES

As usual with Huawei, the software is based on Android. EMUI 11 covers the open source core of the software with its own shell. This includes all kinds of functions, such as gesture control via hand movements and the EOD function of the Huawei Mate 40 Pro.

Google services are not integrated. But Huawei also wants to have put together a good software package with its own ecosystem. And with this there are also further developments. The new Petal Search function, which has a striking similarity to Google Lens, was shown for the first time on this scale. With the help of the camera, things, people or data can be searched for in a wide field. A photo of a logo is enough to find the associated app in the App Gallery or a text excerpt, for example to search for a song in the browser .

In addition, Huawei announces that it will start with Petal Maps. From October 22nd there will be a dedicated map app in beta. However, Huawei has not yet decided when the final version will land on mobile phones.
