Huawei P10 and Honor 9 in comparison: Equal and equal like to join

In the following competition it says: mother against daughter – specifically: Huawei against Honor. While the P10 from Huawei was one of the first flagships to be delivered this year, Honor recently unveiled its representative Honor 9 for Europe in Berlin. In this comparison, the editorial team at inside-digital.de clarifies which differences arise, whether there is a front runner or whether both cell phones are on par.

The following article gives an overview of the technical specifications and the differences between the Huawei P10 and the Honor 9 . The tests that inside-digital.de has already published show detailed information on how the Honor 9 and Huawei P10 actually perform:

DESIGN AND HOUSING

The higher quality, the better: plastic and plastic can only be found in this price segment in the rarest of cases. Instead, manufacturers mostly rely on combinations of aluminum and glass. This is also the case with the two smartphones that are of interest: Both the Huawei P10 and the Honor 9 have a metal frame that holds a dress made of rounded and hardened glass. The combination of materials is also noticeable on the scales – at 145 grams, the P10 is 10 grams lighter than the Honor 9. However, there is criticism with regard to the water and dust protection – this is simply nonexistent on both phones.

The overall appearance of the P10 is round and adapts better to the circumstances of the hand than the Huawei P9 in the test by inside-digital.de. In spite of this, Huawei has adopted a lot of its predecessor in terms of looks and highlights the smartphone in particular with unusual colors: In addition to the standard black and silver, customers also have the choice between green and blue. The antenna strips stand out from this on the back in white.
The Honor 9 opposes this with a shimmering appearance that absorbs light reflections and makes them its own. This is probably due to the 3D curved glass on the back. The edges are slightly rounded and are somewhat reminiscent of Samsung’s Galaxy S8 in terms of design . The Honor 9 is available in the popular colors black, blue and gray.

DISPLAY

If you don’t take it exactly and don’t have a data sheet in mind, the differences in the recessed displays of the two phones are not significant. However, if you take a closer look, the display of the Honor flagship is a few millimeters larger: While it has a diagonal of 5.15 inches, the screen of the P10 model is 5.11 inches. Even watchful eyes will not find any difference in resolution, because both smartphones have a resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 pixels in accordance with Full HD quality. The pixel density is roughly the same, but the Honor 9 “only” reaches 428ppi, while the value of the P10 is 431ppi. Since both values are in a sphere in which the human eye can no longer see individual pixels, both displays will be razor-sharp for users.
Huawei has given its standard model of the flagship line-up a screen protector made of Gorilla Glass 5. So it should be protected from minor falls and scratches. It is currently unclear whether the glass that covers the Honor 9’s display is also made of Gorilla Glass, but Honor describes it as “scratch-resistant”. Differences can also be seen in the viewing angle stability: While the Huawei P10 can be read perfectly at deep angles, the Honor 9 has small weaknesses here.

TECHNICAL PERFORMANCEExperience has shown that both Huawei and Honor rely on processors from the self-made brand. The Kirin 960 from HiSilicon, for example, holds the scepter in both top smartphones. This is an eight-core core, under which four cores work with up to 2.4 GHz and another four with a maximum of 1.8 GHz. The Mali G71 MP8 is responsible for the graphics. For outsourcing and smooth performance, the P10 and Honor 9 are supported by 4 GB of RAM, which is now a minimum in the upper-class segment. The main memory can, for its part, fall back on 64 GB of internal storage capacity. No further differences can be found in the memory expansion: Users have the option of storing images and other content using a micro SD card to add up to 256 GB.

Honor 9 in the benchmark test

The prominent combination of eight-core processor and sufficient storage space gives both smartphones a decent performance – also in the benchmark test. However, there is a considerable difference between the P10 and the Honor 9. Huawei’s smartphone achieves a value between 120,000 and 130,000 points due to various Antutu benchmark versions, while the Honor 9 scores 149,006 points and can compete with the LG G6 , for example .
Finally, the nominal charge of the batteries should be mentioned, which amounts to 3,200 mAh each, which is okay for the upper class. However, according to the test reports from inside-digital.de, the Honor 9 is slightly ahead here: The newer model achieved 4 out of 5 while the P10 only achieved 3.5 out of 5 stars.
CAMERA

Although Huawei’s smartphones benefit from a partnership with Leica and Honor is Huawei’s subsidiary, the latter’s products have to forego the good reputation that Leica brings with them. The P10 comes with a dual camera, the lenses of which are not manufactured by the traditional German company, but are at least certified. One of them is the monochrome module, which has a resolution of 20 megapixels. The 12 megapixel module is responsible for the red-green-blue color space. While the aperture of the larger sister model P10 Plus has been improved, the P10 still has to make do with an aperture of f / 2.2 each. The recordings in the inside-digital.de test were convincing, even if the quality could have been better in some situations.
Honor 9 and Huawei P10 in comparison

The Honor 9 comes without a Leica, but also with a double-eyed camera – the number of megapixels does not change compared to the P10. The below-average aperture, which is only f / 2.2 here, is not only disappointing on the Huawei phone, but also on the Honor 9. Other flagships can shine more in this area. Nonetheless, the camera of the high-end device achieves sufficient results, but here and there overshoots the mark. The pictures often appear processed or have a tendency to reddish in low light. On the other hand, the possibility of taking photos in RAW format is positive.
Selfie fanatics are each served with an 8-megapixel camera, which at least with the P10 can shine with manual settings. In the Honor 9, on the other hand, only the usual filters and beautification modes that have become so typical for Honor can be found.

SOFTWARE AND CONNECTIVITY

Both the Honor 9 and the Huawei P10 use Android version 7.0 Nougat in terms of software. Since the Honor 9 is only fresh on the market, it could also have been delivered with a newer nougat version ex works – presumably both phones will be provided with updates afterwards that play a newer Android version. Google’s operating system is covered with the EMUI 5.1 user interface, which makes the app icons individual and additional features from Huawei and Honor are preinstalled.
When it comes to connectivity, the Chinese smartphones are quite similar: WLAN support, USB Type-C and Bluetooth version 4.2 are also involved. It is gratifying that both the Honor 9 and the P10 offer LTE Cat.12, which means that users are offered 600 Mbit / s in the downstream and 100 Mbit / s in the upload.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

Honor has always pursued an excellent price-performance ratio. As a flagship, the Honor 9 is quite cheap in comparison. The manufacturer charges 429 euros for the smartphone.

At the market launch, the Huawei P10 went on sale for 599 euros. Since it has been available for a long time, the price has already been pushed down a bit. According to the price history of inside-digital.de , you can now get hold of the device for 470 euros.

CONCLUSION

A final look shows: Despite two brands, the Huawei P10 and Honor 9 are very similar in most areas. Above all, they score with the good workmanship and the high-quality dual cameras, which are completely sufficient for everyday use. Those who value unusual design are well served with the Honor 9 and its shimmering garb. If you prefer something a little less exotic, you are better off with the Huawei P10. The Honor 9 also scores with its very attractive price. In comparison, the price for the P10 seems rather expensive, even if it is a little more high-end.
The two flagships will not be able to overtake each other. Rather, they swing in light waves and with the same course towards a similar goal, without turning maneuvers or sprints. Users are served equally well with both mobile phones and should rather make the choice based on liking.
