Mercedes-Benz: Bye Diesel, electric cars take over the command

At the end of the current decade, Mercedes-Benz should put an end to cars with integrated gasoline engines. E-cars are the future. And in 2022 a new prototype is to see the light of day that is already making people want more.

E-cars like the Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4Matic are playing an increasingly important role in Daimler’s future strategy.

Mercedes-Benz wants to complete the almost complete electrification of its fleet faster than previously planned. New vehicles that are still equipped with an internal combustion engine should be available for the last time in 2024. From 2025, all new vehicle architectures will be purely electric, the Daimler brand announced in Stuttgart. All customers should then have at least one fully electric alternative to choose from for each model.

THE ELECTRIC CAR IS BECOMING A DRIVING FORCE

The goal is to become fully electric by the end of the decade. And that everywhere where market conditions already allow. In other words, in addition to customer interest, the actual combustion engine shutdown by 2030 will also depend on government subsidies. But Daimler will not be able to hide behind the ambitious goals of the competition . This is one of the reasons why Mercedes-Benz intends to offer battery-electric vehicles well in advance of this – by 2022 – in all segments in which the brand is represented. Daimler boss Ola Källenius says: “The turning point is approaching and we will be ready when the markets switch completely to electric cars by the end of the decade.”

For Mercedes-Benz, however, the transition to the electric age, which has already begun, is also associated with higher costs. In total, more than 40 billion euros are earmarked for investments in battery electric vehicles between 2022 and 2030. The staff must of course also be made fit for the future of e-mobility in the form of training. The introduction of three new electric car architectures is planned for as early as 2025.

MB.EA for medium-sized and large cars as the basis for future electric cars from Mercedes-Benz
AMG.EA for e-cars with particularly high performance based on the model of Mercedes-AMG
Van.EA for electric vans and light commercial vehicles for emission-free transport

MERCEDES-BENZ IS PLANNING FURTHER GIANT FACTORIES

At the same time, Daimler wants to become more independent from suppliers and is planning to set up additional battery production facilities – so-called gigafactories. Together with partners not named, eight cell production sites are to be built around the world. These capacities complement the already planned network of new plants for the production of battery systems.

One of the aims of research is to increase the energy density of batteries for electric cars. For example, by significantly increasing the silicon content of the anode. According to the manufacturer, this would result in longer ranges and shorter loading times.

NEW CONCEPT: MERCEDES-BENZ EQXX

According to its own information, Mercedes-Benz is currently working on a concept vehicle that already has these characteristics. The planned Vision EQXX should offer a range of more than 1,000 kilometers. And: over 100 kilometers, this e-car should achieve a single-digit consumption value of kilowatt hours at normal speed on the autobahn. Currently it is often 20 to 30 kWh per 100 kilometers and more. A presentation of the Mercedes-Benz EQXX is planned for 2022.

According to the new plans, sales of electrified cars at Mercedes-Benz should increase to 50 percent by 2025. This is also important, because the EU Commission wants to implement a set of rules by 2035 that prohibits the registration of new cars with CO2 emissions .
