Metro Exodus – Nuclear Apocalypse for Everyone

Metro Exodus was launched in February 2019. In retrospect, I would now like to see what made the game the success it was and what is really behind the series. More and more people seem to be forgetting that Metro wasn’t a video game to begin with.

Metro Exodus is not only fascinating because of its game world.

Metro Exodus is the third title in the series consisting of Metro 2033, Metro Last Light and Metro Exodus. Both 2033 and Last Light also received a Redux, which should improve the originals.

THE STORY OF METRO EXODUS

Metro Exodus takes place in the same world as Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light before. In a post-nuclear world, a few thousand people have found refuge in the Moscow Metro. New groups quickly formed there, the metro was split up, and a new civilization began underground.

The world on the surface is too polluted to leave the metro unthinkable. Why also? There’s nothing left but mutants and radioactive radiation anyway.

The protagonist of our story is Artyom, an orphan who was rescued as a young child from a station doomed to death. He grew up in the VDNH, a station that specializes in raising pigs and growing mushrooms. However, when mutants threaten the station, he makes his way to the largest station on the metro, the Polis, to get help.

The events of Metro Exodus take place after Artyom firmly believes that there must be life outside of the Metro. On one of his endless trips to the contaminated surface of Moscow, he sees a working train. This was completely unthinkable just a few days ago. He has been bothered by the constant fighting and corruption within the metro for a long time. So he makes the decision to flee the metro for good. Together with a few allies, he sets out on a journey across Russia in search of survivors.

THE SUCCESS OF METRO EXODUS

Metro Exodus was nominated for a number of awards and accolades after its release. In 2020, for example, the game won the Pégases Award for Best International Game.

On Metacritic, the game scored a whopping 82 points based on the opinion of 53 reviews. This sentiment is also reflected on other platforms, and the game is convincing. In addition to exciting and sometimes almost terrifying gameplay, the game convinces with a good soundtrack and an even better story. New players can also enjoy Metro. The story mode simplifies the game so much that you hardly need can to explore the world of Metro Exodus.

But how did the success of the game and the series come about?

METRO 2033 BY DMITRY GLUKHOVSKY

Like many others, I got my first glimpse into the world of Metro not from a video game, but from a novel. Metro 2033 is a 2007 novel that achieved massive success in Russia and then internationally. Metro 2033 was followed by Metro 2034 and Metro 2035, completing the series so far.

It wasn’t until a while later, in 2010, that the video game for Metro 2033 first appeared on the scene. At this point in time there was already a loyal fan base around the Metro universe, which was just waiting to dive into the post-apocalyptic world.

The world of Metro is dark and melancholy.

Metro 2033 remains a very popular novel to this day. I bought the original version in Moscow about 2 years ago and was amazed at how many offshoots the series had. Dmitry Glukhovsky sold the rights to Metro 2033 when it became clear how much potential the series had. Meanwhile, there are endless adventures that take place in the world of Metro.

These offshoots are not only found in bookstores. The Metro universe has also inspired countless people on the Internet to get creative and write their own story.

Now does this mean that the success of Metro Exodus can only be attributed to that of the book? No. Metro Exodus is a well-made game that has attracted a lot of new fans to the series. The mere fact that many of today’s gamers don’t even know about the origins of the series speaks for itself.

CONCLUSION

Metro Exodus is a game that will remain relevant even in 2021. The idea of a future after the nuclear war still fascinates people as much as it did over a decade ago when the Metro universe was first established.

Metro Exodus also offers its own story for newcomers to the series, which does not necessarily require prior knowledge. But once you have completely immersed yourself in the world of Metro, you will find it difficult to get out again.

The Metro Saga is currently available cheaply in the Steam Summer Sale . For just under 27 euros instead of 105 euros, you can buy the entire Metro range, including the enhanced edition of Metro Exodus . So if you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to join the series, now’s it.

WHAT’S COMING AFTER METRO EXODUS?

The future for the Metro game series looks bright. The Ukrainian development studio behind Metro Exodus has already commented on another title in the Metro series. According to them, development of the next installation in the series is already in full swing.

As with previous games, the studio relies on a strong, well-thought-out single-player story at the core of the game. However, they also announced that by working with Saber Studios, an online multiplayer aspect of the game could also come into question. However, the studio assured that multiplayer will not be the focus of development and that Metro will essentially remain the single-player adventure that fans know and love.

However, as the game is still in the early stages of development, not much can be said about the exact storyline. However, the developers are very transparent in their communication with players. The latest news is always published on the studio’s blog.
