New Nintendo Switch OLED: That’s why the console surprises and disappoints at the same time

4th Conclusion on the Nintendo Switch OLED version

There are not many changes to the new Nintendo Switch OLED. But it is particularly disappointing that the changes that many fans want are not included. What we can expect from the console, which will be released on October 8, 2021, is shown here.

THE NEW OLED DISPLAY

Probably the most prominent feature of the new Nintendo Switch OLED is the display. Instead of a 6.2 inch LCD display, the new switch will have a 7 inch OLED display. The advantages of such an OLED display are better color representation and better contrasts. The new displays are also more energy efficient than previous models. In terms of resolution, however, the display remains at 720p. So it will be an OLED display without Full HD, which is a bitter disappointment for many gamers.

However, this display improvement is only relevant in the handheld mode of the system. There is no improvement in the Nintendo Switch OLED version for use on TV. And that, although many fans have long wanted a 4k port. There was no mention of this either in the announcement trailer or anywhere else. So it is quite certain that such a feature will not be included in the new switch.

OTHER CHANGES TO THE NINTENDO SWITCH OLED

In addition to the obviously biggest change to the console’s display, the Nintendo Switch OLED version offers a few other changes. These are mainly minor ease-of-life improvements.

LAN port: Unlike the previous switch, the new version will have an integrated LAN port. Players who like to connect their console via LAN can now do so directly without using the USB port via an adapter .
Improved stand: The Nintendo Switch OLED version will be equipped with a more robust stand. This is particularly relevant for players who use their console in tabletop mode. One can hope that the console will fall over less and be more stable thanks to the new stand.
Better audio: In handheld mode, the new switch will have better speakers. They are intended to improve the audio and gaming experience for the user.
Larger memory: The memory of the new switch will double from 32 GB to a whopping 64 GB.

WHAT CAN THE NEW SWITCH DO?

Outside of the changes listed above, the functionality of the new console will not change. The Nintendo Switch OLED version can be used as usual in TV mode, handheld mode and tabletop mode. According to Nintendo, all games that run on the old Switch will also work without any problems on the new Switch.

According to Nintendo, nothing will change in the performance of the device. So it cannot be expected that the new switch will run faster and smoother. This announcement in particular was another bitter disappointment for many fans.

The new model will be available in white and neon red / neon blue. The launch price is expected to be $ 349.99, with a price in euros to be announced.

CONCLUSION ON THE NINTENDO SWITCH OLED VERSION

Overall, the announcement of the Nintendo Switch OLED version was rather sobering. Of course, an OLED display has clear advantages over a classic LCD display, but many fans perceive this change as simply not enough.

In general, the changes to the console are not bad, or even useless, but fans hoped for more. With an increase in console performance and support for 4k, the new switch could have been consistently convincing. Instead, however, Nintendo decided to make a number of smaller improvements. It remains to be seen whether fans of the console will still accept them in their hearts.
