Now they’re getting serious: This is what Sony’s car plans look like

In recent years, the CES has increasingly developed into a car trade fair. That’s why Sony used this platform to flesh out plans for its own car. The schedule is ambitious and the partners are top-class. Sony’s Afeela could be a real success.

At CES 2020 and 2022 , Sony presented the first concepts for its own electrified car. A year ago, the Japanese were smiled at for this. A concept is more than a rumor and in this respect the Sony car seemed more realistic than an Apple car . It takes more than just a concept and a few ambitious ideas to survive in the highly competitive car market.

SONY INTRODUCES ELECTRIC CAR BRAND AFEELA

Just one year later, Sony took the next step and rolled out a first prototype in Las Vegas. Together with Honda, Sony first founded the company Sony Honda Mobility, and then developed the car brand Afeela. The four-door sedan is equipped with 45 sensors and plenty of displays.

At the heart of the vehicle is a large center console. The bumper should also transmit information to the outside world via a display. The Afeela drive is electric and autonomous driving should be possible up to level 3. In stop-and-go traffic, drivers can take their hands off the wheel.

The lines are clearly drawn and there are few flourishes or special features. However, the small “mirrors” for the cameras and the gently sloping rear end are striking. Meanwhile, in the front there is a display area that is supposed to communicate with other road users.

Sony wants to take orders for the vehicles in North America from 2025, with delivery from 2026. The sporty schedule shows that the other half of the joint venture with Honda is an established car manufacturer. The other partners in the project also surround themselves with excellence.

For the entertainment , Epic Games is on board, whose Unreal Engine should provide the necessary power. The graphics engine should also support the user interfaces and systems for communication and security . The processors in the Sony car are supplied by Qualcomm, who with their Snapdragon series provide sufficient computing power and the digital chassis.
