O2: 5G for more existing customers

It seems like O2 is completely shifting its focus to 5G and tearing the field up from behind. O2 only launched 5G eight months ago and has since built a considerable network of real 5G transmitters. Now the network is being released for more customers than before – including existing customers.

Activation will take a while, but from July 6th, all new and existing customers will be able to use the 5G network with any of the O2 Free Unlimited tariffs or a volume tariff from the O2 Free M. And that at no extra charge. This means that 5G tariffs are available at O2 from 29.99 euros a month, as the network operator from Munich reports.

When purchasing one of these tariffs, 5G will automatically be included for O2 customers. If you are an existing customer, you can book the free “5G access” package in the Mein-O2 app. Of course, you still need a 5G-capable smartphone and you have to be in the 5G expansion area. Since O2 currently only uses 5G on the higher- performance 3.6 GHz frequencies , the availability of 5G is significantly lower than that of Telekom and Vodafone. These two providers often simply switch on 5G in parallel with LTE. Although this offers what appears to be a large 5G network, it delivers significantly lower data rates.

5G ALSO FOR EXISTING O2 CUSTOMERS

The availability of 5G in the tariffs is currently significantly lower: only the O2 Free Unlimited Max and O2 Free Unlimited Smart tariffs, as well as the O2 Free L Boost and O2 Free L tariffs, provide access to 5G. From July 6th, 5G will also be an integral part of the O2 Free Unlimited and the volume tariffs O2 Free M Boost and O2 Free. You cannot expect gigabit data rates with the tariffs – the tariffs remain capped at 300 Mbit / s.

If you already have an O2 contract for DSL or cable, you can save 50 percent of the basic costs thanks to the combination advantage. For young people under the age of 29 and people over the age of 60, the monthly price is reduced by 10 euros.

By the way: You can currently test the O2 network completely free of charge . For 30 days, O2 will send you a data and call flat rate that gives you complete access to the network. You don’t have to pay a cent for this. The card deactivates itself automatically at the end of the test period.
