Samsung: These are the first details about the Galaxy Watch 4

The introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is still a long time coming. Contrary to many expectations, it was not yet revealed on Monday evening. But Samsung has already given us a few glimpses of what will be possible with the new watch in the future.

Smartwatch fans will have to wait a little longer for a successor to Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 3.

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona as the world’s largest mobile communications trade fair has been slimmed down this year due to the corona pandemic. Nevertheless, Samsung used the opportunity to open the trade fair on Monday to present the first details of the new Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatch. A few details, mind you. Because the actual re-launch of Samsung’s new smartwatch flagship was still missing. Instead, Samsung limited itself to providing a glimpse at One UI Watch. This is the wearables operating system that is being developed in cooperation with Google. It should combine the best of Tizen OS and Wear OS on one platform and, among other things, be part of future wearables models from Samsung.

ONE UI WATCH: THIS OPERATING SYSTEM SHOULD COMPETE WITH WATCHOS

Samsung’s claim is clear: One UI Watch should, in particular, make the interaction between Galaxy Watches and smartphones even more seamless in the future. In the best case, One UI Watch should work as well with cell phones as Apple’s WatchOS works with iPhones. Can that work? The future will show. The first small details that Samsung has now shared with the public definitely make you want more.

If, for example, compatible apps are installed on the Galaxy smartphone, they should be transferred directly to the Samsung Smartwatch. As soon as the user adjusts the app on the smartphone, the changes for the smartwatch variant are automatically adopted. Incoming calls can also be accepted or rejected via the smartphone via the connected smartwatch. It is also clear that there will definitely be a Galaxy Watch 4 again, which with an eSIM can also be used in cellular networks independently of a connected smartphone. The following teaser video shows some initial details about the functions of One UI Watch in conjunction with Galaxy smartphones from Samsung.

In general, Google and Samsung promise that wearables based on One UI Watch should not only benefit from better performance, but also from better battery life, among other things. In addition, the two partners offer access to a large number of apps – including those from Google such as Google Maps with an integrated navigation solution especially for use on new smartwatches. Following on from this, Samsung will launch an application for developers to design clock faces towards the end of the year.

SAMSUNG GALAXY WATCH 4: PRESENTATION AT A SEPARATE UNPACKED EVENT

And what about the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 itself? There is no answer to this question. Because Samsung only revealed on Monday that the new Smartwatch will soon celebrate its world premiere as part of a separate unpacked event. However, the South Koreans did not have a specific date.

In a company announcement in the evening it was at least revealed that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 should see the light of day in the summer. Current rumors are that the next Unpacked event will take place in August. It will be the first smartwatch from Samsung to be equipped with One UI Watch and the new unified platform.
