Sky stamps streaming service – that’s changing now

The offer at Sky continues to shrink. After two channels were switched off at the turn of the year and two more will follow in February, Sky is now actually stamping out a streaming service. He only started a year ago.

Peacock is the name of NBC Universal ‘s streaming service. Or rather, his name was Peacock. In fact, the streaming service, which was only available in Germany as a free sub-provider from Sky , has discontinued its service. As various media unanimously report, only three titles are still available on demand. All other content has been deleted.

The extinguishing campaign began at the end of December 2022. Without further notice, Peacock’s content disappeared from the Sky platform. According to the media magazine DWDL , only three of the 40 formats that were left at the time are now available. And it is to be expected that these three formats will also disappear soon. As the Golem colleagues report, the license agreement for Peacock has already expired. When asked, Sky confirmed to Golem that the NBC activities with Peacock in Germany were only a limited license agreement.

This is amazing considering the Peacock only launched a year ago . At that time, customers were promised an additional, free streaming service on the platform. Ultimately, it was content that, like all other Sky content, could be accessed via the Sky platform search and was provided with an additional Peacock logo. Golem said that Sky will also deliver a lot of new content in 2023, including in-house productions. “Sky is constantly guided by the wishes of its customers and continuously adapts its content portfolio.”

SKY DELETES EXTERNAL PARTNERS

With the end of Peacock, Sky says goodbye to another external partner. At the turn of the year, the children’s channel Junior and E! entertainment separately . And on February 1st , NatGeo and NatGeo Wild will be phased out .

Recently, rumors about a possible sale of Sky made the rounds . The current parent company Comcast has put the pay – TV platform up for public sale. Rumors that the German 1&1 could take over the pay-TV provider are now apparently off the table. How things will continue with Sky as a company and thus also with the platform in 2023 is still open. Sky now has a lot of competition due to the large number of streaming platforms in the series and film sector. The Bundesliga rights are still a bargaining chip, although here, too, there has been competition for some time that the Federal Cartel Office wanted and the former pay-TV monopolist is no longer allowed to show all games.

It is also unclear what will happen to the Peacock brand. Because unlike in other countries, Peacock never started as an independent streaming service in Germany. With the actual end of the Sky platform, NBC loses its entire user base.
