Anyone who uses an up-to-date smartphone would like to keep it always up to date. Updates make just that possible. And in the past few days, not only have new security patches been made available, but also some major upgrades. Among others from Samsung , OnePlus and Google. But one after anonther.
SAMSUNG: LOTS OF NEW UPDATES
Especially eager for smartphone updates: Samsung. Numerous smartphones have recently received new firmware for more security . The April patch from Google for the Android operating system is now available for users of the Samsung Galaxy A21s , the May patch for users of the Galaxy A9 (2018) and Galaxy A42 5G models . In addition, Samsung is distributing the current June patch for more and more devices. For example for the foldable variants Galaxy Z Flip , Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Fold . Other models on which you can recently install the June patch include the Samsung Galaxy A50 ,Galaxy A52 , Galaxy A52 5G , Galaxy A71 , Galaxy M31 and the somewhat older Galaxy A8 (2018) . There are also S-class models such as the Galaxy S20 FE 5G and the Galaxy S10 series. And the latest Google patch for more security can already be installed on the Galaxy Note9 , the Galaxy Note10 family and the Galaxy Note20 .
There is also news regarding new firmware upgrades to Android 11. Because three more Samsung phones can now be updated accordingly. The update to Android 11 is now available not only for the Galaxy A20e , but also for the Galaxy A20 and Galaxy A30s . The new One UI 3.1 user interface is also on board. Meanwhile , a new update for the camera software is available for the Samsung Galaxy S21 . But there is also not quite so good news. For the Galaxy A20e and Galaxy A70 models, security updates are now only provided twice a year.
Samsung announces important patch for July
In addition, Samsung has officially announced that the rollout of another important update will start in about two weeks. Together with the July patch from Google, Samsung wants to eliminate a bug that can lead to problems when using Android Auto on many Galaxy smartphones . Especially with models of the new Galaxy S21 family, according to reports, it can happen that unlocking the smartphone causes the connected Android car to crash. The patch now announced for July should eliminate the problem.
HUAWEI ENSURES MORE SECURITY
At Huawei , a lot is revolving in the smartphone sector these days about the upcoming switch from Android to HarmonyOS – even if nothing is expected to change for German users in the foreseeable future. At the same time, Huawei has provided new updates for a few smartphones. For example, the April patch for models like the Huawei P40 , Huawei P40 Lite , Huawei P40 Lite 5G , Huawei P40 Pro or Huawei P40 Pro + . The April patch has also been available in Germany for a few days for the Huawei Mate 40 Pro and the Huawei P smart 2019 . Also for the models still co-developed by HuaweiHonor 9X and Honor 9X Pro .

For those who find it too annoying to take or decline a call with their mobile phone in hand, Google has given an update to the Google Assistant. With its help, it is now possible to accept or reject calls by voice command: “Hey Google. Accept / reject a call ”. A new folder can also be found in Google Photos, which only allows access if you authenticate yourself a second time. Important: The secure folder does not work with data stored in the cloud on the Internet. It is limited to local data.
ONEPLUS DISTRIBUTES FURTHER UPDATES
There are also important new security updates from OnePlus . For example for the OnePlus 8T , which can now be used with OxygenOS 11.0.8.14 . Part of this update is not only Google’s June patch, which fixes numerous newly discovered security holes, but also an overall improvement in smartphone performance. In addition, the manufacturer has fixed a bug that can arise when photos are taken with a resolution of 48 megapixels. In certain situations it can happen that the record button does not trigger as desired. Huawei is also making the same patch available for the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro – in the form of OxygenOS 11.0.7.7 .
For the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro is meanwhile OxygenOS 11.2.7.7 available. What’s new: reduced power consumption in certain scenarios, an improved user experience when taking photos and videos and, on the OnePlus 9 Pro, a newly added HDR button in the camera app so that additional manual settings can be made before scheduled recordings.
NOKIA’S ENTRY-LEVEL SMARTPHONE GETS ANDROID 11
There is also good news for all users who use the entry- level smartphone Nokia 1 Plus . You can now install the upgrade to Android 11 in the functionally restricted and memory-saving Go Edition in the first countries. And that is remarkable. Because once the smartphone with Android 9 came on the market. Too bad: Germany is once again not one of the regions that will benefit first from the update. In Europe, users in Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, Poland and Portugal are the first to be supplied .
APPLE PATCHES OLD IPHONES AND IPADS
And Apple recently released a new update: iOS 12.5.4. However, this is “only” a patch for older iPhone models. And one that Apple classifies as “important”. Because with iOS 12.5.4 Apple has eliminated a serious security gap in models such as the iPhone 5s , iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus . Under certain circumstances, as Apple writes on its support page , the security gap is already being actively exploited for attacks. Also important: The update is also available for some iPad models (iPad Air, iPad mini 2 & 3) and for the 6th generation iPod Touch.
