15 manufacturers in one fell swoop: Only the really big players on the market can do that. And one of those is chipmaker Qualcomm. He has just presented his new SoC ( System on a Chip ). Put very simply, this is the heart, the senses and the basis of your smartphone’s camera, sound and graphics. The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 wants to be better than its predecessor in every respect. But what are the highlights of the new smartphone models in 2023?
NEW SMARTPHONES FROM SONY, XIAOMI AND MOTOROLA
The big names Xiaomi , Motorola , Oppo , OnePlus and Sony are among the partners who have already announced new smartphones with the processor . The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 from Qualcomm and thus the new flagships should not only be faster. But a look at the announcement by the Americans shows that you can count on 40 percent more computing power for the processor and 25 percent more performance for the graphics. With the Snapdragon X70 5G modem there is of course 5G and now also in parallel on both SIM cards . The latest Bluetooth version and WLAN 7 are also integrated.
AUDIO, CAMERA AND GAMING
But it’s not just faster, higher, further that counts with the new processor. The audio performance is also said to have been increased. So you can look forward to Dynamic Spatial Audio. Behind the name hides the technology that already exists in Apple’s iPhone. You not only hear a sound that surrounds you, but that also adapts to your movements. This means that you get a different effect depending on the position of your head.
When it comes to gaming, you can look forward to Unreal Engine 5, including Vulkan 1.3. In concrete terms, this means that you get hardware-accelerated ray tracing, including Vulkan 1.3. This brings softer shadows and better reflections on reflective surfaces to your phone.
When it comes to image processing, i.e. camera functions, Qualcomm has placed particular value on better segmentation of the images into levels. This allows the smartphone to recognize which parts of the image contain what and to process or optimize the image differently for each image area. For example, you can give a cat a different filter than the flowers, which are also in the picture. There is also a great feature for portrait and night photographers: points of light in the bokeh can now be changed. For example, ugly dots become stars or hearts.
IT WILL START AT THE END OF 2022
The first smartphones with the new processor are to be presented as early as the end of 2022. We expect new models at CES 2023, which starts on January 1, 2023. This means that fans of high-end cell phones don’t have to wait long to be able to marvel at the first devices.
