But how do you recognize the security of a lock before buying it? Stiftung Warentest tested the security of 81 different bicycle locks on its website . The results clearly show that when it comes to bicycle locks, there is more to it than just the price. One of the cheapest locks achieved the best result of the year.

THE SAFEST U-LOCKS

In the test, padlocks were able to convince above all with a very good security against burglary. The Kryptonite New York Lock M18-WL is not only the best U-lock, but also scored a 1.1 for high security . However, it lost points in the area of ​​handling, because the solid locks are not always easy to attach.

Stiftung Warentest also found that good locks do not necessarily have to be expensive. Although the test winner among the U-locks costs a whopping 110 euros, there is also a good option for a good 40 euros. With a rating of 1.7, the Trelock U4 Plus is also “good” in terms of security and reliability.

FOLDING LOCKS TESTED

Those who prefer folding locks are well served with the Abus Bordo Granit 6500K/90 BK SH. With a 1.6, it offers good security and can also convince with good durability. However, the lock also costs around 130 euros. The Kryptonite Keeper 510 Folding Lock, on the other hand, is a little cheaper, not far behind the test winner in the folding lock category.

CHAIN LOCKS UNDER THE MAGNIFYING GLASS

The Kryptonite Keeper 785 chain lock received the best overall rating this year . This is mainly due to the easier handling compared to a padlock or folding lock. Overall, the lock received a grade of 1.6 and was also able to convince in terms of security with a grade of 1.3. In addition, the lock only costs around 40 euros, which makes it one of the cheapest locks in the test.
