Surprising first place: These are the ten most popular e-cars among Germans

E-cars are on the advance – also in Germany. In the coming years, the combustion engine is to be replaced on tours through the city and across the country, but also on the motorway. But which e-cars are the Germans’ most popular models?

Compact SUV for electric car fans: The Hyundai Kona Elektro.

A recent market analysis by PwC showed that German carmakers can also score points abroad with their e-cars. And not just within the EU. VW in particular was able to sell many electric cars in the first half of 2021. But what about in this country? Which models and manufacturers do Germans trust most? This is revealed by a look at the new registrations, which the Federal Motor Transport Authority summarizes in statistics. This is published every month and now shows a glimpse of July 2021.

TOP 10 E-CARS: GERMANS LOVE THESE MODELS

Based on the number of new registrations applied for in this country in July, the top 10 most popular e-cars are very mixed from the manufacturers’ point of view. What is striking, however, is that despite Tesla, Renault and Co., it is mainly German car manufacturers that appear in the most popular list. The lower three ranks open the electric version of the Fiat 500 (10th place), the Opel Corsa-e (9th place) and the BMW i3 (8th place). Above all, the Fiat 500 drove the competitor Mini out of the top 10 – although it is not a bargain at almost 30,000 euros. The Opel e-Corsa and the BMW i3 are also among those models that the Germans hold up, despite discontinuation plans and quite high prices. While the e-Corsa was sold 916 times, over 700 people opted for the BMW e-car.

The middle field of the top 10 is opened by VW and its ID.4 (7th place). The Smart Fortwo follows in 6th place, followed by the Renault Zoe (5th place) and the Hyundai Kona Elektro (4th place). While the VW ID.4 is primarily considered a space saver, the small car from Smart can also stay in the bestseller lists in July. Renault is the only Frenchman represented with the Zoe model, which, however, falls behind the competition in comparison. The Hyundai Kona Elektro went over the counter 1,267 times and is also available as a hybrid or combustion engine.
Anyone who primarily associates Tesla with electric cars today will be disappointed. Elon Musk’s company makes it into the top 3 with Model 3, but also lands in third place. Despite this, the e-car was only registered 489 times in July. The VW ID.3 (2nd place) makes Tesla much more competitive and has 2,180 models sold. In June, however, it was a little more.

FORGET TESLA: THIS IS THE FAVORITE IN GERMANY

Despite the marginally lower numbers of the VW ID.3, the Wolfsburg-based company does not need to worry: At the top of the top 10 in July was the VW e-up. This e-car is also a small car that, according to VW, should actually be phased out. In the long term, VW wants to replace the e-up with a new electric model. Until then, however, customers will continue to be drawn to the electric car: In July there were 2,566 new registrations. The top 10 fluctuates only slightly compared to June : Tesla was able to secure first place last month, the VW e-up landed in second place, closely followed by the VW ID.3 and the Renault Zoe.
