Telekom pulls the plug: Customers only have 2 years left

If it doesn’t work, you just stop working. Telekom probably thought that too. Certain tariffs were discontinued on November 1, 2020. In November 2022, Telekom will, in the truest sense of the word, finally pull the plug.

Telekom pulls the plug: Customers only have 2 years left

Fixed line, cellular or TV , 5G or Smart Home: Telekom is Europe’s largest telecommunications company. But the Bonn group does not succeed in everything. Again and again there are setbacks and products that sound innovative at first and promise added value, but then customers don’t want them. And it is precisely this scenario that CarConnect has now fallen victim to.

OFF FOR INNOVATIVE TELECOM SERVICE

The service should transform every car into an intelligent “connected car”. A simple adapter that you plug into the OBD slot of your car provides a WLAN with up to 10 GB of data volume. On the one hand. On the other hand, customers can get additional valuable information on their mobile phones for 10 euros a month. This also includes the position of the car. If it is stolen, it can be located at any time. In addition, the associated app reports possible bumps that someone else might have caused while pulling out of a parking space, for example, and shows the status of the battery and routes traveled. But from November 2022, Telekom will put an end to it.

Already in mid-2020 there were signs: Telekom will discontinue CarConnect, which was only brought onto the market in 2017. The tariffs have not been marketed since November last year. Today it is clear : Anyone who still uses CarConnect can do so until November 1st, 2022 at the most. Then the Telekom pulls the plug. As things currently stand, no successor is known. The apps will disappear from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

ALTERNATIVES

Like Telekom, Vodafone once had an OBD solution called “ V-Auto ” that wanted to turn the car into a connected car. But here too the demand was apparently too low. The TomTom Curfer, a similar model, like Vodafone’s V-Auto, also quickly disappeared from the market. If you are looking for alternatives with GPS tracking, you will find one with the PACE Link One. For around 120 euros , the solution provides a “Find my car” function that works with GPS tracking. There is also an error code analysis and information on vehicle data via the app. Also integrated: an automatic emergency call ( eCall ).
