Great Britain is no longer part of the EU. This means that the EU roaming regulation no longer applies there either. For the British, this means from 2022: Traveling to mainland Europe will be really expensive again if they use their cell phone. The first provider has now announced its prices.

Brexit will cost the British dearly. Especially when they are traveling and using their cell phones. Because three out of four British network operators have announced that they will be tightening roaming prices. The current announcement by EE is particularly striking. Everything Everywhere belongs to the BT Group, and Deutsche Telekom also has shares in the company. And the provider’s customers will have to be prepared to pay an extra £ 2 per day from 2022 when they use their cell phone in the EU. 2 pounds is about 2.33 euros.
Interesting: The costs only apply to customers who sign their contract with EE after July 7th. All existing customers can apparently continue to roam at the known cost. As the colleagues from golem.de report, the network operators Three and O2 are limiting the data volume for fair use abroad. Three will reduce the limit from 20 to 12 GB. And O2 UK wants to charge £ 3.50 for every gigabyte consumed beyond the 25 GB limit.
SO FAR, NO SPECIFIC PRICE INCREASES FOR GERMAN CUSTOMERS
Umgekehrt gibt es für deutsche Nutzer, die nach Großbritannien reisen wollen, derzeit noch keine konkreten Preise oder Ankündigungen, dass das Roaming in Großbritannien wieder kostenpflichtig wird. Bei O2 Deutschland hieß es vor kurzem, man prüfe, ob es auch über das Jahresende hinaus beim EU-Roaming auf der britischen Insel bleibt. In Österreich hingegen hat ein Anbieter bereits angekündigt, zum Jahreswechsel wieder horrend hohe Roaming-Gebühren berechnen zu wollen.
Generell ist das Roaming innerhalb der EU sowie in Norwegen, Liechtenstein und Island ohne Mehrkosten möglich, solang du dich an gewisse Fair-Use-Regeln hältst. Doch die EU plant eine Verlängerung und will das Roaming auch auf Schiffen und in Flugzeugen in der EU verpflichtend machen. Hier gibt es derzeit noch Kostenfallen.
