UMTS shutdown: radio silence on Amazon devices

The UMTS shutdown goes on worldwide and in Germany the old power is turned off frequencies freizuräumen. Now there are the first “victims” of the shutdown. Because some devices from Amazon will soon no longer be able to be used properly. But there is a way out.

The UMTS switch-off in Germany is imminent, more precisely it is already in progress. The old network will be taken out of service. This has hardly any effect in many areas. But there are limitations. For example with old smartphones and navigation systems . But even when the data network is gone, you will still be able to make calls.

UMTS shutdown: you have to know that now

AMAZON DEVICES AFFECTED BY UMTS SHUTDOWN

But now there is a problem with Amazon . Old Kindle devices do not have LTE, and in the USA they even have no WiFi . This means that they can practically no longer be used. The first and second generation of the Kindle and the second generation of the Kindle DX are affected. After switching off, you can no longer supply the three models with new e-books and only have access to existing content on the readers.

The good news: Amazon did not officially sell the first generation of Kindle in Germany and the second is also rare in Germany. Therefore, the complete failure affects a few German customers. The situation is different with the list of devices that Amazon names in its support document. Some of these have been successfully marketed in Germany:

Kindle Keyboard (3rd Generation)
Kindle Touch (4th Generation)
Kindle Paperwhite (5th, 6th, and 7th generation)
Kindle Voyage (7th Generation)
Kindle Oasis (8th Generation)

WLAN INSTEAD OF UMTS

But here, too, there is good news. Because these models do not have LTE and are therefore difficult or impossible to play with new content due to the UMTS switch-off in mobile communications, but they have WiFi. This means that you can continue to spruce up the devices with new content, at least in stationary data networks.

Amazon’s solutions for customers of the old versions are straightforward. References to the trade-in program and recycling instructions must suffice. That is a blow in the neck for these customers, who were certainly among the first in the company and probably also among the most loyal.
