Vodafone is significantly improving the network for this holiday island

Vodafone has laid almost 10 kilometers of new fiber optic cable in order to better serve the transmission masts and the landline network in one of the most popular holiday regions. The residents also benefit from faster cable internet, which can also be used by hotel WLANs.

It is new fiber optic lines and the latest fiber optic technology that are now ensuring an improvement in the data highway and additional bandwidth reserves on the island of Sylt in many places. The proportion of fiber optics in the network has been increased significantly. Vodafone has also expanded the central Internet connection from the island to the mainland and connected the most important technology location on the island with additional fiber optic cables.

In total, the company has laid 9,500 meters of fiber optic cable in the past few months, as Vodafone has now announced. Since Vodafone operates two infrastructures, the cable network and the mobile network, both networks benefit from it. Nine of his cell phone stations on the island are now connected to their own network with fiber optics. The basis for 5G is also laid, which is already activated at one location. According to our information, Vodafone operates a total of 16 transmission masts on Sylt.

20 GBIT / S CONNECTION TO THE MAINLAND

For Vodafone technology boss Gerhard Mack, the connection between the island and the mainland is particularly important. “Above all through the multiple connections to the mainland, we ensure more stability and even better performance in our gigabit networks,” he says. If more data is generated on the island, it will also have to be downloaded from the island and onto the Internet. Therefore, the bandwidth of the central connection from the island to the Vodafone network on the mainland has been doubled from 10 to 20 Gbit / s. That doesn’t sound like much when you consider that Vodafone offers 1 Gbit / s for private households. In fact , hardly any household uses these data rates- and then only for a few seconds. So the connection with 20 Gbit / s seems to be sufficient at the moment. In the event of capacity bottlenecks, the bandwidth can be expanded quickly, they say. The central technology location was also connected to other fiber optic lines, creating alternative routes in the event of a fault.

According to the technology manager’s knowledge, fast internet access also plays an important role when choosing a holiday destination for holidaymakers on Sylt. “We are now taking care of the 5G expansion on Sylt step by step.”

MORE LANDLINE INTERNET FOR 6,000 HOUSEHOLDS ON SYLT

Around 6,000 households in the health resorts of Kampen, Wenningstedt-Braderup and Westerland as well as in Tinnum and Keitum have been given a better network connection in the fixed network. With the new fiber optic lines, Vodafone was able to create additional network sections and new fiber optic nodes. This reduces the number of households that use a network area. This peculiarity of the cable networks, known as shared medium, often causes bottlenecks if the provider does not expand accordingly. As a result of the expansion, the bandwidth reserves have increased by a factor of 5 in some cases. Ultimately, the WLAN supply in hotels and holiday homes should also improve if they use Vodafone.

Like Telekom with VDSL and FTTH , Vodafone is gradually moving the fiber optic network closer and closer to the customer. In the early days of the cable internet, many kilometers of coaxial cable were sometimes transmitted, but today the optical fibers often lead deep into the towns. They end at what are known as fiber optic nodes in the streets. From there, the last few meters to the customer are followed by the coaxial part of the gigabit network with DOCSIS 3.1 technology .
