Actually, July 1st was the day on which UMTS should have been history at Telekom and Vodafone. But while Telekom confirms that the process will run throughout Germany on the night of July 1, Vodafone has other plans.
Because Vodafone will not switch off UMTS in one night. So far, the announcements of the Düsseldorf network operator had the effect that the 3G network would be offline across Germany on July 1st and someone in the network center would pull the plug during the night.
A Vodafone spokesman said when we asked that the shutdown would be different. “There are four time windows for the shutdown,” says Vodafone. That sounds a bit like the process that Telefónica (O2) decided on. There it says that the UMTS network will be switched off in all of Germany in several waves . The last transmission masts will not be there until December and UMTS no longer exists in Germany.
At Vodafone, however, the UMTS switch-off procedure is much tighter. The first time window is in the night from June 30th to July 1st. This is followed by three more on the following nights, but not on the weekend. Thus fall in the night of July 1st to July 2nd and then again into the next 5th and 6th of July. and 6./7. July further regions away. On July 7th, Vodafone’s UMTS network will be deactivated throughout Germany, according to the plan. Vodafone did not announce which regions are on which night.
THIS IS HOW THE UMTS SHUTDOWN WORKS AT TELEKOM
At Telekom , the plans to switch off UMTS are different than at Vodafone. There, too, one speaks of a staggered shutdown and one will not shut everything off at once. “But that will happen soon,” said a spokesman for the Bonn company. The shutdown itself is a pure software issue, the locations themselves had been prepared for it in advance as part of the network modernization. “So we talk about hours / days rather than weeks or months,” said a spokesman. Here, too, one leaves the back door open not to have switched off all UMTS channels on July 1st.
But the fact is: UMTS will soon be history and one or two days more in some regions will not matter in the end. It is important that you are prepared for this with your mobile phone. What is the need to know UMTS shutdown at Telekom, Vodafone and O2, we have created you in a guide .
