Volkswagen ID.7 makes its debut: One detail causes a stir

The Volkswagen ID.7 is large and imposing. The new luxury sedan can be seen at the CES exhibition center in Las Vegas – for the first time ever in public. However, still cleverly camouflaged. Because the official world premiere will follow later.

Actually, the CES in Las Vegas is a big trade fair for the latest consumer electronics. However, more and more large automobile manufacturers are also discovering the exhibition center in the Nevada desert in order to present spectacular innovations. Last year, Mercedes demonstrated the futuristic Vision EQXX electric car . And BMW also used the fair in 2022 to present the iX M60 and the iX Flow with chameleon effect to the American public . In 2023, Volkswagen will once again be appearing at the CES with a sensational premiere.

VOLKSWAGEN ID.7: TO BE ADMIRED IN CAMOUFLAGE AT THE CES

Because the Volkswagen Group of America is giving a preview of the next model of the ID at CES. Family from which we recently tested the ID.4 SUV model . The brand new ID.7 is scheduled to celebrate its official world premiere as a series model in the second quarter of this year, but can already be seen with camouflage at the Las Vegas exhibition center. Even if the car does not yet allow a clear view of its exterior design, it is already clear that the ID.7 will round off Volkswagen’s e-model portfolio at the top end. The sedan should offer top technology and a particularly high quality, Volkswagen promises.

The Volkswagen ID.7 cannot be denied a certain similarity to the Passat.

This includes, among other things, a high range. According to the manufacturer, it is around 700 kilometers according to the WLTP standard . This means that 550 to 600 kilometers should be realistic in everyday life on long distances before the next public charging station has to be driven to. Volkswagen does not yet have any information on the maximum possible charging capacity, but rumors assume that up to 200 kW could be possible at the peak at fast charging stations. Maybe even more. The battery capacity of the Volkswagen ID.7 should be more than 100 kWh.

HUGE SCREEN IN THE INTERIOR

In the interior there will not only be a 15-inch screen for operating numerous functions of the electric car, but also a standard head-up display with augmented reality content. The driver will therefore see all important driving data directly in his field of vision. In addition, Volkswagen promises illuminated touch sliders and climate control integrated into the first level of the infotainment system. It is to be largely automated – in part also by voice command, for example to warm up cold hands in winter with a warm stream of air. The command “Hey Volkswagen. I have cold hands” should suffice.

In Las Vegas, the Volkswagen ID.7 will be presented with a 40-layer camouflage paint finish in a QR code design, which is divided into 22 separate areas. If you apply electricity to the paint layers, they light up in color in the form of an electroluminescence effect. If you connect the whole thing to a sound system, the rhythm becomes visible when individual areas light up. Of course, this impressive delicacy will not be available in series production.

VOLKSWAGEN ID.7: LARGE WHEELBASE FOR PLENTY OF INTERIOR SPACE

Further details on the technical data of the almost five meter long vehicle are not yet available. All that is officially known is that the wheelbase should be 2.97 meters and there should therefore be plenty of legroom in the interior. Just as you would expect from a luxury sedan. The performance of the basic model with rear-wheel drive could be 170 hp, if you opt for the all-wheel drive top model, you should be able to drive up to 300 hp.

Volkswagen has not yet revealed a price for the ID.7. It may be revealed at the world premiere in the second quarter, but maybe just before the market launch. If Volkswagen wants to compete with Tesla, the basic version of the ID.7 should cost around 60,000 euros. The electric car, with its gently sloping roof for particularly high aerodynamics, will not only be available in Germany, but also in the USA and China, for example. A station wagon version of the ID.7 is also planned. Production will take place in Emden.
