In the current calendar year, Volvo will probably sell fewer cars than planned. Reason enough to open up new groups of buyers with a cheaper model – of course fully electrified and cheaper than previous electric vehicles from Sweden.
A look at the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric (test) clearly shows that Volvo can build electric cars at a premium level . However, at least around 45,000 euros are due for this Stromer. For the new top model EX90, Volvo even calls for a price above the 100,000 euro barrier . A new “Baby-Volvo”, which the Swedish car brand plans to present in the coming year, is likely to be cheaper. This is reported by the “Handelsblatt” .
VOLVO IS TARGETING SIGNIFICANTLY MORE E-CAR SALES
The new entry-level model is said to be smaller and based on an already known platform from the Chinese parent company Geely. The aim is to massively increase sales with the new entry-level SUV by 2025. Volvo boss Jim Rowan said in an interview with journalists: “The little car will be a very important car for us.” After 700,000 cars sold in 2021, it should be 1.2 million vehicles sold per year by the middle of the current decade. According to market observers, however, only around 600,000 units will be sold in the current year.
It is not yet officially known what name the new Stromer with Swedish genes will bear. The “Handelsblatt” speculates that it could be named EX30. Meanwhile, it is certain that the same platform should form the basis that Mercedes also uses for its Smart #1 . Mercedes is building this small SUV together with Geely in a joint project. The basic version costs just under 41,500 euros . A price level that Volvo could also aim for.
CAR SUBSCRIPTION IS THE FOCUS
Primarily, however, Volvo boss Rowan does not want to sell the car in the classic way, but rather offer it as a Volvo car subscription . The larger C40 Recharge Ultimate is currently available from 859 euros per month as part of the Care by Volvo subscription. If you prefer to buy the coupe SUV, you have to pay at least almost 45,000 euros.
Accordingly, the subscription to the new “Baby-Volvo” is likely to cost around 700 euros per month, depending on the equipment selected. This should also bring younger adults into focus as potential buyers . So far, buyers of a Volvo with an age of almost 50 years are comparatively old.
