Paying with a Girocard or credit card is also becoming more and more standard in the catering trade. This not only saves you the trip to the ATM, but also means you no longer have to handle cash with every payment transaction. Tipping, on the other hand, will be more difficult. The money goes to the restaurant’s account first and doesn’t end up directly with the service staff. Is it still safe to tip when paying with a card?

TIPPING WHEN PAYING BY CARD – HERE’S HOW

Basically yes. Almost everywhere it is now possible to give a tip even when paying by card. All common cash register systems are now prepared for the cashless payment of tips. Because instead of the usual 7 or 19 percent VAT for food and drink , tips are tax-free. The system must therefore distinguish between the two amounts.

You can check afterwards on the bill whether the tip reaches the waiter or the waitress in full. The invoice amount with VAT and the tip without VAT should be listed separately here.

The restaurant is obliged to pay the tip to the respective service staff. A tip is only tax-free if it is paid by the guest to a specific service employee. Paying tips equally to all employees in a pool is not permitted.

DOES THE TIP ALSO REACH THE SERVICE STAFF?

Whether the money is actually paid out with the salary to the service staff depends on the respective employer. In the case of delivery services such as Lieferando in particular, there are repeated allegations that the tip paid in the app does not reach the supplier. Lieferando himself emphasizes that the tip, together with the salary, is paid in full to the driver or partner restaurants.

However, many of the drivers are employed by the partner restaurants and not directly by Lieferando. And there seems to be some black sheep there. Therefore, it is particularly popular with delivery services to pay the bill in the app but to hand over the tip in cash upon delivery.
