The new series from the “Dark” makers has been casting its shadow for a long time. At the end of 2021 there was talk of “1899” for the first time, but mainly because it used a technology in production that had been used very rarely until then. Almost a year later, the time has come and the new mystery series starts streaming.

1899: ADDICTIVE MYSTERY SERIES

On the Rotten Tomatoes website , which provides information, reviews of films and series, all three seasons of “Dark” have an 8.8/10 rating. The series can also call a Grimme award its own. Two years later, the duo behind it, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, have come up with a new mystery series called “1899”, which seems to have a good chance of subsequent success.

A wasteland somewhere between London and New York. The year is 1899 and a band of people are setting off on a new life. In a country where nothing should be impossible: America. The Europeans embark on the journey on the ship Kerberos, which is under the command of Captain Eyk Larsen (Andreas Pietschmann). A ruthless sailor who makes life a little harder for everyone on the ship.

Unlike the auspicious dreams of America, the voyage on the Kerberos quickly turns ominous. On the high seas, the crew and passengers come across a ship that has long been considered lost. They make a terrifying discovery: the passengers on the Kerberos and the missing ship are mysteriously connected. What was supposed to be the start of a new life is increasingly turning out to be a nightmare.

THIS SPECIAL TECHNIQUE IS USED

The exciting thing about “1899” is that bo Odar and Friese used many effects during the shoot. This also includes the so-called volume technique , in which real sets are set up in front of an LED wall, which in turn forms a virtual background. This technique could also be seen, for example, in the Star Wars series “The Mandalorian” .

In addition to the special technology, well-known actors can also be seen in “1899”. They come from different countries around the world and thus have a conscious parallel to the characters from the series, who also come from all over Europe. Among others, the Spanish actor Miguel Bernardeau, who is already known for his role Guzmán in “Élite”, will be there. Also starring in 1899 are Danish actor Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (The Rain), French actress Mathilde Ollivier (Operation: Overlord) and British actor Anton Lesser (The Crown). Incidentally, this is also consistently pursued with regard to the languages that can be heard in the original soundtrack: While “Dark” was produced exclusively in German, in “1899” the original also includes German, English, Spanish, Portuguese,Interview with Deutsche Welle .

WHEN DOES 1899 START?

The new mystery series “1899” starts today, November 17th, officially and exclusively on Netflix . If you want to get a taste of the often confused but logically thought-out universe of Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, or if you haven’t had enough after “1899”, you can still find all episodes of “Dark” streaming on Netflix .
